The Energized CEO Score

The last time you were away for a full week, what actually happened?

Most owners cannot answer that without flinching. The answer is not about your holiday. It is the clearest single measure of whether you built a business or a job with staff, and it is one of thirty questions in this assessment.

Which of these is you?

These are the four answers to that question. Every owner recognises himself in one of them, and most pick the first two.

Answer one

I have not been away for a full week in over a year.

Answer two

I was away, but I worked through it.

Answer three

It ran, but I spent the next week catching up on what piled up.

Answer four

It ran, and I heard about what happened when I got back.

If you picked the first three, nothing is broken in your business. It simply was not designed to run without you, so the only mechanism available is waiting. That is fixable, and the first step is knowing precisely where it is happening.

Your summary page

  • Your overall score out of 100 and which of the four bands you are in
  • All six drivers scored, each against the target an independent business needs
  • Your Freedom Gap: how long the business holds without you, in weeks
  • Emailed to you the moment you finish

How it reads

Four bands

80 to 100 Architect Genuine independence. The work now is depth and enterprise value.
60 to 79 Operator in Transition Real progress, and real dependence still sitting in the structure.
40 to 59 Founder-Dependent The business works because of you, not despite your absence.
0 to 39 Deep in the Trap Structurally dependent. Most owners who take this land here, and it is the most fixable place to start.

Who this is for

You will get something from this if

  • You run a business with five or more employees, three or more years in
  • Revenue is roughly between half a million and ten million
  • You have caught yourself saying "everything still comes back to me"
  • You want to scale, but not at the cost of your sanity

It is too early if

  • You are a solo founder testing your first idea
  • You have no team yet, so there is nobody to hand anything to
  • The question is still whether the business works, not whether it works without you

Who built this

Andre Abi Awad

I went bankrupt twice before I was thirty. The second time taught me more than any course I have taken since, and what it taught me was that the problem was never effort. It was design.

Since then I have spent eighteen years advising owners across fifty-seven countries, and the pattern is remarkably consistent: the things that made you successful in the early years quietly become the things that trap you in the later ones. This assessment is the diagnostic from my book The Energized CEO, turned into a score you can actually act on.

Before you start

How long does it take?
About eight minutes. Thirty questions, four options each, and you pick the one that describes your situation rather than rating yourself out of ten.
Will I be sold to?
You will get your score, and you will get an email explaining the driver you scored worst on. There are things you can buy afterwards and they are clearly marked. The score is yours either way, and the free summary page is genuinely the full summary, not a teaser.
What do you do with my answers?
They are stored so your report can be generated and so you can retake the assessment later and see what moved. Your name and email are used to send you the result and to stay in touch about this work. Nothing is sold or shared.
What if I score badly?
Most owners who take this score below 40. That is not a judgement on how capable you are; it usually reflects how much of the business you personally built. The score exists to show you which of the six drivers is costing you most, because that is where the next ninety days should go.
Can I take it again?
Yes, and you should. Ninety days is the right interval. Your raw answers are kept, so the comparison is real rather than a fresh guess.
Is it accurate if I answer optimistically?
No, and the questions are written to make that difficult. They ask what happened rather than how you would describe yourself, which is harder to flatter. If you are tempted to pick the better-sounding option, that hesitation is itself the finding.
